I'd dearly love to either get an email when I have new tasks (particular pending membership requests) in one of my mailspaces, or to be able to subscribe to an RSS feed.

You can subscribe to an RSS feed of your tasks already. You'll find it at http:/​/​www.mailspaces.com/​taskbox/​+rss (or change to +rss2 for RSS 2.0 or +atom for Atom 1.0).
